강환섭 화백의 소 그림 - 강인한 한국 소

강환섭 화백의 소 그림 중 하나인 Figure 1의 암소와 송아지는 사실화로 그린 전형적인 한국의 소 가족을 보여준다. 그림 1과 같은 해에 작업한 1964년도 드로잉 작품인 Figure 2의 황소에서는 도전적인 자세와 강인한 표정의 황소를 보여주고 있다. 소의 몸에는 한국의 전통 문양을 넣어 한국 소 임을 표현하고, 이를 통해 한국의 강인한 정신을 나타내었다. 이 한국소 그림은 작가의 말 그림(www.soamuseum.com or 네이버카페: 미술투자클럽, cafe.naver.com/artinvest, 게시판/미술가소개, 분석/게시번호 34453/ 강환섭 화백 발그림에 표현된 전통 문양의 시작)에서 보여 준 한국인의 전통과 정신이 담겨진 것과 흐름을 같이 하고 있다.

Figure 3은 앞의 연필로 그린 두 그림과는 달리 먹과 수채 물감을 사용한 그림이다. 그림의 소는 편안하게 앉아 있는 모습이지만, 그림 전체적인 분위기는 강인한 소를 느끼게 해준다. 한국의 부드럽고 아름다운 문양들을 강인한 체격의 소 몸체에 장식하여 한국인의 혼이 강하게 느껴지도록 작업한 독창적인 시도였다고 생각한다.

강환섭 화백의 경력에 대하여

강환섭 화백의 경력 (career)은 강환섭 기념미술관 블로그 (blog, www.soamuseum.com) 에 있는 ‘블로그(blog)‘를 클릭 (click)하고, 오른쪽 카테고리 (category) 중 W.S.Kang을 click하면 자료2 (number 2 click)에 ’고 강환섭 화백 전시이력‘ 및 ’강환섭 화백 프로필‘을 참고하면 된다. 

자료의 뒷부분 중 화력(작품활동 경력) 부분의 처음에 국선입선 (제3회, 1954년) 수상경력을 볼 수 있다. 국선 수상 해인 1954년은 강환섭 화백이 군인으로 전쟁에 참전 후 제대한 직후이고 서울대학교 부설 교원양성소 회화과에 학생 신분이었던 것으로 판단된다. 화백께서 들려준 바에 따르면 1954년 당시에 대학교 재학생은 국선에 응모할 수 없는데, 평가 받고 싶은 마음에 참여했다가 ‘생각지도 않게 입선을 하게 되었다‘고 했다.

그 후 의정부에 소재한 학교에서 미술교사 생활을 하게 되셨는데, 그 때 강환섭 화백의 아들인 나는 유치원에 다니던 기억이 어렴풋이 난다. 어쩐 일인지 잘 살던 시골에서 노량진으로 이사하게 되었는데, 이사 후 해가 바뀌면서 집 옆에 붙어 있는 국민학교 (초등학교)에 나는 입학 (1961 년)하게 되었다.

고정된 수입을 받을 수 있는 학교 교사 생활을 접고 내가 초등학교 입학 전 해인 1960년부터 전업작가 생활을 시작 한 것 같다. 전업 작가를 시작한 이유를 정확히 모르겠지만 대학생 때 국전에 입선했던 기억이 강하게 다가 왔던 것 같고 또는 생각보다 적은 월급으로는 작가의 부모님을 비롯한 많은 가족 친지 (아버님 강환섭 화백은 여러 가족친지의 생계를 오랫동안 담당했다고 했음)들의 생계를 감당하기 어려웠기 때문일 수도 있다.

강환섭 화백이 남겨 놓은 그림 중에는 1950년대 말의 작품도 일부 있지만 1961년도부터 지판판화 작품을 많이 접할 수 있어서 본격적인 작가 활동의 시작은 1960년이 시점이라 할 수 있겠다.

작가의 1960년 이전 작품은 모험적이고 실험적인 작품을 선보인 것으로 판단되고, 1960년 이후인 전업작가 시작 초기의 회화 작품에서도 도전적인 작품들을 많이 엿볼 수 있다. 그 이후 제 3자의 시각, 특히 외국인들의 시각으로 한국의 정서, 감성, 정신 또는 혼을 볼 수 있도록 작품 안에 한국을 담는 작업을 끊임없이 추구 한 것을 남겨진 작품을 통해 알 수 있다.
